The Lost Bard

Tony Marziano

There was a bard, a gallant bardArmed only with his luteAnd from his heart, he sang his wordsThat rendered damsels mute

One day, the bard, he felt a lossHis chest, compressed and tightHe felt that something was amissThat something wasn’t right

He tried a song to lift his moodTo sing away his painBut all his words, they did fall short,When singing under strain

“What is this feeling I should bear?”The bard did cry aloudFor it was pain like nothing elseAnd pressed him to the ground

Aimlessly he wandered streetsThe forest, did halt his strideHe took a seat upon a logAnd thought about his life

And while he thought, he saw aboutThe trees looked old and frailAll life and love had left the earthAnd too, the air was stale

“What manner of pain could be the cause,That brings the world such sorrow? For if today is left in void,There will be no tomorrow”

He tried and tried, a last attemptBut empty were his wordsHe lacked a reason for his causeAnd struggled for a verse

Bitterness then showed its face“Hear me, for I vow, That if it’s true, I’ve lost my giftI’ll take my final bow”

He placed his lute upon the groundAnd made to walk awayWhen across his path, a sparrow flewAnd landed in his way

Upon a branch, the sparrow twitched And caught the singer’s eyeIt then puffed out its little chestAnd sang with all its might

The bard was forced to stop and watchFor the tune was soft and sweetAnd as he listened, he did realiseA tear run down his cheek

The sparrow twitched from side to sideAnd continued with its songAnd the bard did feel a jolt of lifeThat made him sing along

The bard and bird did share their tuneIn perfect harmonyAnd as they sang, all life and loveReturned among the trees

Leaves afresh, all bright and green,The air was sweet with scentAnd it was then, the bard did knowThe sparrow heaven sent

“Thank you beautiful sparrow,For the gift I have received. It was your tune that brought me backThat much, I now see.”

Though years have passed, the gallant bard,Is still grateful for the dayWhen in the darkness of his lifeA sparrow came his way

So when the world is lifelessWhen the heart inside you breaksJust wait for a sparrow to cross your pathHowever long it takes
